Disney's Art portfolios consist of Walt Disney Animation Art, which authentically captures Disney's animated characters as they appeared in films or other entertainment (either as hand-painted limited-edition cels, limited-edition sericels, original production cels or limited-edition giclees), and Disney Fine Art, which celebrates the artwork of renowned artists who chose to interpret Disney's characters and settings in a variety of beloved art styles (these are often captured as limited-edition giclees or serigraphs on paper or canvas).

Limited-Edition Sericels - Limited-Edition Sericels are created through a very precise fine art screen-printing process known as serigraphy. An artist cuts a stencil for every color in the image. A sericel may contain as many as 35 different colors, each individually screen-printed onto an acetate cel. Their edition sizes typically run from 2,500 to 5,000. They may or may not be matched with a lithograph background.

Hand-painted, Limited-Edition Cels - Hand-Painted Limited Editions Cels are either hand-inked or the lines are xerographically applied all done by the original Disney Ink & Paint Department on the Disney Studio Lot in California. A pencil outline of the characters is carefully inked onto the acetate cel or transferred by a six-step xerographic process. Hand-mixed colors are matched to the original artwork and hand-painted onto the cel. The cel is then placed on a lithographic reproduction of the original animation background. These specially-created masterpieces typically have edition sizes of 500 or less.

Giclée - Pronounced 'jee . clay', is the newest fine art printing process to be developed which uses a digital scan of the original artwork (or, in some cases, the original digital animation file itself) as the source. Artists then skillfully perfect the colors to best capture the color saturation, lighting, and brushstrokes of the original. The digitally re-created artwork is then printed onto museum-quality, acid-free paper or canvas with an enhanced printer, specially modified for fine-art reproduction. Many artists favor this process because it can so closely match the look of the original (in some cases, printers even add a textured coating to the final print to make it look exactly like the original painting).

Original Production Cels -Original Production Cels differ from Limited Edition Cels in that they are one-of-a-kind cels that were actually photographed in the production of a Walt Disney Television Animation series or Feature Film. They are all hand-inked and hand-painted and matched with a reproduction of the original animation background. They are all created by and direct from the Walt Disney Studios and all priced at the minimum issue price set by Disney.

For over thirty years, Peter Ellenshaw brought his movie-making artistry to the films of Walt Disney. Peter was the master of matte painting in its simplest form, a special effect whereby an object or landscape--a castle, a ship, an island--is painted on glass and set in front of the camera so that both the real setting and the painting are filmed as one. Born in England, Peter Ellenshaw learned the art of matte painting for the from the film artist who perfected it, W. Percy Day, O.B.E. Starting in 1934, Peter worked for seven years as Day's Assistant.

After painting on mattes for such British films as Shape of Things to Come and Thief of Bagdad, Peter started painting mattes for Walt Disney, beginning with Disney's first all-live action picture, Treasure Island (1950). It was the start of a professional and personal relationship with alt Disney that was to span nearly three decades. In 1954, Ellenshaw created the first full-color painting envisioning Disneyland® Park.

He also brought his artistry to such Disney classics as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959), Mary Poppins (1964) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). Ellenshaw won an Academy Award® for special effects for his work on Mary Poppins. Also, his non-film work has gained him a worldwide reputation among fine-art connoisseurs as an extraordinary artist with a unique vision.

Now Walt Disney Art Classics offers a very special portfolio of limited-edition, fine-art prints by Peter Ellenshaw. Each piece is of art perfectly captures on canvas every nuance of the original through the fine-art process of giclée, and each is signed by the artist himself.
